Dollars v Pounds - Public Cloud CostsThe fallout from the Brexit vote is beginning to hit the cost of cloud services from the hyper-scale providers.

Microsoft has already warned that prices for its cloud-hosting services will be going up in the New Year because of the drop in the value of Sterling compared to the Dollar. Amazon and Google will no doubt be contemplating falling revenues from the UK market too.

According to research firm 451 Research, UK users of those public clouds could see their bills go up by £1,750 compared to before the referendum. Suddenly the price war that was bringing public cloud prices down has turned into a battle to the top.

So what is the alternative? Well, as any good public service broadcaster might say, other public clouds are available!

At iomart we have built our own cloud hosting environment. It’s called CloudSure. It’s VMware vSphere-based, hosted in our secure UK data centres, and you pay for it in £s and not $s. It offers you public cloud, private cloud or a hybrid mix at UK prices.

Managing the use of the hyper-scale providers’ public cloud can often be complicated because of the sheer number of services within their environments. Your invoice can often look more like a crossword puzzle than a simple invoice.

With CloudSure you can choose the type of cloud that works best for you and manage it through our easy-to-use customer portal. Billing is straight forward with fixed prices, fixed contract terms and enterprise SLAs. It is delivered from multiple secure UK data centres all owned and managed by iomart 24/7/365.

While reducing cost is not always the driver for a move to the cloud, for many IT projects the price of the cloud services being used does carry significant weight.
