If you’re still on running SQL Server 2005, now is the time to consider upgrading as extended support terminates after April 12th 2016. This means that security updates and hotfixes will no longer be available from Microsoft, leaving you with higher maintenance costs and potential compliance concerns.
SQL Server 2014 is the best upgrade path as it’s less vulnerable and will carry on receiving patch updates. It’s also 13 times faster and offers a number of benefits including improved availability, scalability and security. It should be fairly straightforward to upgrade and you’ll benefit from the added value of the features now included in SQL Server 2014, as well as the hybrid opportunities available to you with Microsoft Azure.
