2012 in review

It’s been a huge year for Melbourne. As the year draws to a close, we’re looking back at some of the things we’ve been up to over the last 12 months, as well as giving you a taster of what’ll be happening in 2013…

Our new home

At the start of the year, we moved into our new home and we’ve been enjoying visits from friends and customers. The offices attracted some press attention too – we’ve been featured in The Guardian and voted one of the Top 10 coolest offices in the UK by the Telegraph.

And if you haven’t visited us yet, you can do so from the comfort of your own desk. We’re now featured on Google Street View, thanks to our friends at 360spin who are Google’s Trusted Photographer in Manchester.

3D datacentre tour

But beyond our offices, we also wanted to show everyone the real ‘engine room’ of Melbourne. Our customers trust us with their business-critical data and we wanted a way to show everything that we do to protect it. Which is why we decided to go 3D and create a 3D tour of our datacentres for customers and prospective clients to understand what it is we offer.

24/7 support and certifications

The datacentres are where our staff work on-site 24/7, which is what we began offering this year. We also secured a number of key certifications in information security (ISO 27001) and business continuity (BS 25999). Achieving these was an opportunity to demonstrate our maturity as a hosting provider by solidifying the processes already in place and aligning them with globally recognised methodology. We’re also now a Manchester Digital Recommended Supplier.

New friends!

All these things – along with a ‘virtual’ visit from Stephen Fry – have helped us work with some great new clients over the last 12 months.

We partnered with boxer and Olympian Amir Khan to launch his new website and online shop, happily managing a tweet to his million-plus followers on our scalable cloud-hosting platform, Serverlove.

In the 60th year of the Queen’s reign, we were honoured to be chosen to host the Jubilee Time Capsule – a crowdsourced archive of memories that was presented to the Queen at a ceremony in London where we were present. Who’d’ve thought a bunch of geeks from Manchester would be hosting a “royal” server?

Talking of big events this year, we’ve always been aware of the impact that the Olympics would have on the UK’s technology infrastructure. As part of that, we supported the creation of and joined IXManchester – a regional network of Internet providers who have come together to reduce the reliance on London as the UK’s Internet hub. This, along with our network’s on built-in resilience, meant that it was business as usual for the Olympics.

New parents!

And of course, there was our own big event – in August, Melbourne joined the iomart Group plc, one of the UK’s leading cloud computing providers. While our ownership changed, our customer-focused and friendly attitude has not at all 🙂

Upcoming awards and 2013…

Finally, we’re pleased to say that we’ve been nominated for a couple of awards. Firstly, the HostReview.com Readers’ Choice Awards for best hosting company. And, closer to home, the City of Manchester Business Awards 2013 for Best Digital/Creative Business and Use of Social Media. So if you like what we do, please vote for us 🙂

So that’s it for 2012. There’s going to be loads happening in 2013, including new products and opening up access to our datacentres across the country in London, Glasgow, Nottingham and Leicester. We’ll be telling you more in the new year.

Until then, from our family to yours, have a great Christmas and a happy new year.

With love

Everyone @ Melbourne
